Under the presidency of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., Senator Sherwin Gatchalian expects that the joint exploration negotiations between the Philippines and China on the West Philippine Seas (WPS) will be fruitful.

Gatchalian stated on Sunday that the Philippine Constitution must be upheld, including the 60/40 sharing of any products as stipulated by national law, as in any negotiations with foreign nations.

Gatchalian pointed out that the fact that China is adamant about its stance is a barrier to the discussions’ success.

He is expecting that with the new administration, a deal might be possible.

In a radio interview, Gatchalian said, “The intention is good but our law must be followed since it is within our Exclusive Economic Zone [EEZ], 60% must be given to us.” “Maganda ang intension pero ang batas natin ang dapat na masunod, nasa loob ng Exclusive Economic Zone [EEZ], 60% dapat mapunta sa atin (The intention is good but our law must be followed since it

Regarding the prospect of negotiations with other nations, Gatchalian asserted that it is quite likely, provided that they respect Philippine law. He cited the joint US-Philippine Malampaya gas exploration project as evidence.
