Joint DOH and LGU tactics increase CAR’s success with the Covid jab

The success of the Covid-19 immunization campaign in the Cordillera Administrative Region has been aided by the social mobilization initiatives of the Department of Health (DOH), which have been augmented by those of the local government units (LGU).

The DOH has ongoing regional programs and initiatives to encourage people to finish their vaccinations for their protection, according to Geeny Austria, Nurse IV at the DOH-CAR, who made the statement during a press briefing.

These include “Oplan level 1,” “Bakunahang Bayan,” and “Bakunahang Bayan 2,” which made the immunization service available.

The DOH’s efforts to increase the proportion of people in the region who have had vaccinations, she noted, have been reinforced by ongoing anti-Covid activities of local government units, particularly in Baguio City and the province of Abra.

According to statistics, the region’s vaccine coverage as of January 5, 2022, was 88.44 percent for the initial dosage, 97.12 percent for those who had received all three doses, 36.03 percent for the first booster, and 5.46 percent for the second.

Children aged 12 to 17 have a vaccine coverage of 29.9%, whereas children aged 5 to 11 have a coverage of 54.97%.

Baguio City and the province of Abra, according to Austria, have the highest immunization rates.

She claimed that Abra had outperformed Baguio’s performance for the first booster dose, recording 64.90 percent while Baguio had 59.66 percent; for the complete dose of children aged 5 to 11, Abra had 124.60 percent and Baguio had 62.54 percent.

“Abra exceeded the record of Baguio in December with various vaccination promotion initiatives,” she said.

She claimed that the Abra province administration had urged the population to get immunization through various initiatives, some of which involved financial rewards.

The general effectiveness of the immunization initiatives, according to her, has also been attributed to Abra’s strategy of concentrating first on densely populated places before moving on to communities with fewer populations.

The local government of Abra’s ongoing anti-Covid-19 initiatives, she added, “inculcated the citizens’ understanding of the self-protection given by vaccination.”
