NegOcc ensures a steady supply with daily production of 1.2M eggs.
Despite the recent increase in the price of the commodity, Negros Occidental is generating at least 1.2 million eggs per day, which is more than enough to meet the province’s daily needs, according to data released by the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) on Monday.
According to Dr. Placeda Lemana, acting provincial veterinarian, the price of eggs increased last week as a result of the ongoing rise in inflation, which increased the cost of labor, inputs, and raw materials.
Lemana told Capitol reporters, “They (layers and growers) say that even though there is an abundant supply of eggs, they have to increase prices because of these reasons.”
Negros Occidental eats between 900,000 and 1 million eggs per day, whereas only 1.2 million eggs are produced every day, according to data from the PVO.
Lemana claimed that due to an oversupply of eggs, layer farms in the province also export eggs to other provinces, and Negros Occidental also imports eggs from Bantayan Island in Cebu, which is nearby.
7.4 million eggs were imported from Bantayan Island last month, while 1.7 million eggs were delivered in Negros Occidental between January 7 and January 13 of this year.
“You may have noticed that we only accept applicants from Cebu. Because of the bird flu, we cannot import eggs from Mindanao, Luzon, Panay, or Guimaras “the PVO leader stated
In an effort to safeguard its PHP8 billion poultry sector, Negros Occidental banned the importation of live birds and poultry products from the adjacent Panay Island provinces of Iloilo, Capiz, Antique and Aklan, Guimaras Island, as well as from Luzon and Mindanao, on December 6.
Certain goods, such as processed and unprocessed raw poultry meat, day-old chicks, hatching eggs, including broiler, layer, and breeder eggs, as well as embryonated eggs, commonly referred to as “balut,” are exempt from the restriction and may be imported regardless of the country of origin of the cargo.
