The Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc. (CAMPI) has praised the proposal to suspend the most-favored-nation (MFN) tax on fully built-up electric vehicles, saying that it will boost the country’s e-vehicle adoption and growth.

The proposal to lower e-vehicle tariffs to zero, according to CAMPI, will complement Republic Act 11697, or the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA).

EVIDA and the plan to suspend the MFN tariff, as well as other steps to liberalize the e-vehicle sector, according to CAMPI president Rommel Gutierrez, will assist the industry’s development, which is now at an early stage.

“CAMPI is a proponent of all-electric vehicle technologies, including hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and battery electric vehicles. “In the mid-to-long term, all of these have the potential to reduce fuel usage and vehicle emissions,” Gutierrez stated.

He also stated that the industry organization anticipates the gradual electrification of private automobiles by providing a wide choice of original equipment manufacturer (OEM) e-vehicles.

“OEM e-vehicle technologies are the result of years of development and study.” It is impossible to oversimplify the e-vehicle drivetrain system by focusing solely on one component. OEM e-vehicles’ performance is measured according to worldwide standards,” Gutierrez stated.

Since 2009, the industry organization has been actively supporting the use of electric car technologies.

“While many factors influence widespread adoption of electric vehicles, the group is optimistic that EVIDA and the proposed zero-tariff policy will move the automotive industry in the right direction in terms of vehicle electrification,” CAMPI said.
