Ilonggos display their devotion by foot and fluvial procession

After a two-year break owing to the pandemic, Ilonggos flocked to the streets and joined the holy fluvial and foot procession on Friday to demonstrate their faith and devotion to Senor Sto. Nino.

“Our fervent devotion to St. Nio, the Child Jesus, is demonstrated by the fluvial and foot procession. Some people who have a strong devotion to the Sto. Nino sees their dreams come true, according to Maria Flor Muralla of the Cofradia De San Jose, who spoke to the media.

Eight fiberglass boats carrying roughly 400 worshippers accompany the mother boat, the M/V Romblon of the Philippine Coast Guard, which is bearing the image of the Sto. Nio, in the fluvial procession. Two dragon boat teams serve as marshals.

The river procession began in front of the National Bureau of Investigation facility in the Iloilo Strait, traveled to the Iloilo River at the Muelle Loney region, and then berthed in front of the Iloilo Freedom Grandstand.

The detachment that joined the fluvial procession, which also signaled the beginning of the foot procession, was welcomed by fifteen “caro,” or wagons, carrying statues of the Sto. Nio and other Catholic saints.

Beginning at Muelle Loney, the procession traveled through busy streets before arriving at the San Jose Parish Church in time for the 5:15 p.m. Mass.

It was followed by the blessings of the statues of St. Nio, along with prayers for expectant mothers and young children.

3,500 participants were estimated by the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office’s operations center.

The fluvial procession, according to Muralla, is a recreation of the Sto. Nino image’s centuries-old voyage by boat into the nation.

It has developed into a custom and a devotion. We are requesting blessings so that our waters would be productive and secure for travelers, the woman stated.

The San Jose Parish Church in Cebu is home to the oldest and 55-year-old replica of the original Sto. Nino picture.
