A satellite was launched by Japan to monitor North Korea.

Japan on Thursday launched a new intelligence-gathering satellite to track North Korea’s military operations amid heightened tensions with Pyongyang over missile tests.

According to Tokyo-based Kyodo News, the satellite would enhance Japan’s disaster response in addition to monitoring North Korean military installations.

Japan’s most recent satellite launch occurs as tensions on the Korean Peninsula are at an all-time high following North Korea’s barrage of missile and projectile launches last year, while South Korea and the US strengthened their military ties with frequent joint defense exercises.

Near Japanese waters, several of the missiles and projectiles were launched.

The satellite’s launch vehicle, the No. 46 H2A rocket, according to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., entered its intended orbit.

Tanegashima Space Center in Japan’s Kagoshima province’s southwest launched the satellite into orbit.

The launch was postponed by one day due to bad weather.

“The radar satellite can record photos of the ground during the night as well as during periods of bad weather. According to the Cabinet Satellite Intelligence Center, it can be utilized to send information in the event of a natural disaster.

The H2A series rocket, which has a 4-meter diameter and measures 53 meters (174 feet) in length, had a mission go wrong in 2003 but has since had success.
