DOST provides assistance to Sorsogon ARBs for “community empowerment”
The Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) Program of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has provided tools valued at PHP247,000 to agrarian reform beneficiaries (ARBs) in Barangay Bentuco, Gubat town in Sorsogon in an effort to help them expand their meat processing business. This announcement was made on Friday by the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR).
The new equipment, which includes a 7-liter stainless steel double sink sausage stuffer, a heavy-duty meat slicer, a 6-liter food processor and emulsifier, a heavy-duty steamer, a 50-liter capacity pressure cooker, an industrial type heavy duty stove, a blow torch, a heavy-duty tabletop vacuum sealer, and stainless steel food steamers (1 set each), will now allow the 80 members of the Gubat Special Agrarian Reform Community Farmers’ Association (GSARC
According to him, CEST is a DOST-initiated project that offers packages of technological and scientific interventions with the goal of changing rural communities into progressive, capable, and resilient ones.
One of the first towns in Sorsogon to acquire CEST was Bentuco, one of Gubat’s most at-risk neighborhoods.
The project, which was handed in last January 20, according to Buensalida, aims to use semi-mechanical technology to enhance meat products’ quality, investigate fresh ideas for extending their shelf lives, and encourage the adoption of hazard analysis critical control points (HACCP) and food safety.
The kits will complement the creative and suitable technology-based livelihood options that the agency hopes to promote in communities, according to Engr. Sandro B. Noguera, director of DOST in Sorsogon.
Noguera stated that DOST Sorosgon will teach the members’ beneficiaries in technical support.
He said, “We will provide training, the fundamental understanding of meat processing, such as the preparation of ham, bacon, enhanced tocino, and longganisa.
In order to help the people of the province of Sorogon reach their full potential and earn more money, Noguera plans to organize more livelihood training.
Noguera stated that in addition to the meat processing plant, they will also hand over the smoke fish processing plant.
The DOST stressed the significance of ensuring that food safety standards adhere to international standards when dealing with food processing.
Liza B. Repotente, Program Officer I for the OIC-Provincial Agrarian Reform, thanked DAR, DOST, and the local government for yet another productive collaboration arrangement they had formed and effectively carried out.
In order to boost the exposure and commercial feasibility of locally cultivated products, Repotente claimed that the DAR is continuously seeking for new ways to deliver them quickly to the right markets.
Longganisa, tocino, siomai, and lumpiang shanghai are among the meat products that GSARCFA began to produce and sell to district jails, Gubat LGU, trade shows, and local consumers in 2019.
The farmers’ group hopes to boost production shortly with the most recent help.
