MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced on Friday that it will soon release the results of the motions for reconsideration (MRs) filed against presidential aspirant Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s disqualification cases in the First and Second divisions.

“We’ll make a decision soon.” MRs must, without a doubt, be decided before the elections,” poll body interim chairperson Socorro Inting said at a press conference following the signing of a memorandum of arrangement (MOA) with election monitor Democracy Watch Philippines.

These MRs, according to Inting, were raffled out to a certain Commissioner.

“I suppose this has been raffled to a ponente whose identity I do not yet know because this is a private matter.” “All we have to do now is wait for these MRs to be released,” Inting remarked.

Petitioners in the previous First Division’s merged disqualification proceedings, including Bonifacio Ilagan, among others, Akbayan, and Abubakar Mangelen, have filed their separate MRs.

Meanwhile, the petitioners in another disqualification lawsuit against the former senator, led by Margarita Salandanan, have asked the Second Division to expedite the case’s determination.

“Wherefore, Petitioners most sincerely beg that this Honorable Commission determines the Petition in this instance as soon as possible,” the group’s urgent move to resolve stated.

It went on to say that making a decision as soon as possible will give the Supreme Court enough time to consider the appeal before the forthcoming elections.

“Furthermore, whatever the Honorable Commission’s ruling is, it will almost certainly be appealed to the Supreme Court.” The Supreme Court deciding the appeal before the elections would be in the country’s best interests,” the organization added.

The petitioners filed a disqualification lawsuit against Marcos Jr. in December 2021, citing his conviction in a tax matter.
