Using a GPS app, Bacolod residents can monitor rubbish pickup
This week, IPM-Construction and Development Corp. (IPM-CDC), the city’s garbage contractor, is testing a global positioning system (GPS) app that will let citizens follow the progress of trash collection.
Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez said in a statement on Monday that after the system’s test run is through, it would be made available to the general public.
“The general public might keep an eye on how garbage trucks are moving. You would know when they are approaching to collect your trash, he added.
According to Benitez, the IPM-CDC administration had previously supplied the city and its inhabitants with a strategy on how to “secure and track the progress of waste collection.”
The technology can provide guidance and locate the trucks using a GPS application, he continued.
Throughout the city, mountains of trash have remained uncollected after the Christmas and New Year holidays since the amount of solid waste produced during the season was greater than what was expected to be collected in accordance with the contract between the contractor and the local government.
The City Council granted Benitez’s request for a four-month extension of the service agreement for garbage collection, hauling, and disposal between the city government and IPM-CDC in December. The agreement was due to expire at the end of the previous year.
Additionally, the agreement between IPM-CDC and Barangay Felisa for the management and operation of the sanitary landfill was extended for an additional four months, or until April 30.
The technical working group for the city has been putting the finishing touches on the terms of reference for the process of holding the bidding for new waste collection and landfill management contracts since Monday.
