Dream, finish your education, a Popcom executive advises young girls.
Young women have been encouraged by the Commission on Population and Development (Popcom) to remain committed to their goals in order to avoid becoming pregnant too soon and complete their education.
“Sila, mangarap. They should dream.) “Magkaroon sila ng plano sa buhay nang sa ganoon ay meron silang motibasyon para makapagtapos ng pag-aaral.” They ought to make plans for their futures so that they would be inspired to complete their education “Lolito Tacardon, the deputy executive director of Popcom, made these remarks during a live interview that was broadcast on One PH on Wednesday night.
Young girls should “talk with their parents and adults, and be critical in assimilating information they obtain from the Internet,” Tacardon also said.
He took the decision in response to data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) that revealed that between 2016 and 2020, the number of registered births to adolescent women aged 10 to 14 years grew by 11%, from 1,903 in 2016 to 2,113 in 2020, or 0.14 percent of all registered births.
The fact that most young girls were impregnated by older guys aged 20 and beyond, according to Tacardon, is the worst aspect of the statistics.
In such circumstances, he declared, “I am frightened because we know that” and added that “at such ages, it is deemed by our laws to be sexual abuse,” saying, “In such a case, I am alarmed because we know that”
Tacardon claimed that Popcom, together with other concerned organizations, has stressed the government’s purpose of empowering youth to pursue their life goals in a number of programs.
In related news, Senator Sonny Angara introduced Senate Resolution 462 to analyze the troubling statistics and develop fresh regulations to address the issue.
The head of the Senate Committee on Youth stated, “This situation is alarming and could possibly deteriorate if not adequately addressed. Nakakabahala ang usaping ito at posibleng lumala.”
The government’s campaign against teen pregnancy, which includes services for comprehensive sexuality education and reproductive health and rights, should be strengthened, according to Angara.
