DICT tells telcos: Encourage SIM registration during festivals.

By setting up registration booths at festivals across the nation, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) is pushing telecommunications firms (telcos) to increase subscriber identity module (SIM) registrations.
Public-drawing events will enhance the SIM registration information drive, DICT Undersecretary Anna Mae Lamentillo said at a press conference at the Globe Valero Telepark in Makati City, particularly in light of the recent decrease in the number of registrants.
“Even if we were prepared for this lull, we must do more. We must take advantage of this to involve more end users in the process. Effective information and education campaigns should be used to reinforce our strategies, according to Lamentillo.
She mentioned how Globe had themed booths at the Iloilo City Dinagyang Festival that helped and informed members about SIM registration.
We appreciate Globe and the other carriers using these occasions to raise public awareness. Together with other efforts, it is crucial that we continue these strategies, she said.
She emphasized that the communication campaigns need to emphasize three essential points: SIM registration is required before the deadline of April 26; it is a safeguard against fraud and scams; and public engagement is required for success.
To increase SIM registrations at the local level, the DICT and the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) are also collaborating with the Department of the Interior and Local Government, the Department of Justice, and the Philippine Statistical Authority (PSA).
In particular for outlying locations, “The PSA is cooperating with NTC for the simultaneous capture of biometrics for the National ID while registering SIM cards,” she stated.
A total of 168,977,773 SIM cards have been registered across the country as of Sunday, or 20.43 percent of the total number of mobile users in the nation as of September 2022.
