Areas along fault lines are examined by OCD, QC, and Pasig.

As part of preparations for an earthquake, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) oversaw the examination of areas near fault lines in Quezon City and Pasig.

The “Walk the Fault” activity was organized on Tuesday by OCD administrator Undersecretary Ariel Nepomuceno and Pasig Mayor Victor Ma. Regis Sotto, Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) acting chairman Romando Artes, and representatives of OCD-National Capital Region (NCR), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the departments of science and technology, interior, and social welfare.

The participants went on tours of the impacted subdivisions in Quezon City and Pasig City as well as Batasan-San Mateo Road in Quezon City. They examined whether the fault’s indicators were still present and visible, as well as whether any buildings or other infrastructure were still directly impacted by the fault, the OCD said in a statement late on Tuesday.

According to the statement, “Walk the Fault” is a component of the Oplan Metro Yakal Plus, Metro Manila’s contingency plan, and preparations for “The Big One,” or the worst-case scenario in the event that a magnitude 7.2 earthquake happens from the West Valley Fault.

The Valley Fault System, which runs through Quezon City and the cities of Marikina, Pasig, Makati, Taguig, and Muntinlupa in the NCR, has two main fault segments: the East Valley Fault and the West Valley Fault.

The National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) for the first quarter of this year is set for March 9, the OCD previously said.

One of the government’s initiatives to encourage community resilience and disaster readiness is the quarterly nationwide earthquake drills.

The province of Masbate was shaken by a magnitude 6 earthquake in the early hours of February 16.

On Feb. 17, OCD 5 (Bicol) reported that the earthquake had caused damage to 61 homes, 15 schools, and six other structures.
