The period for submitting Certificates of Candidacy (COCs) for the 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) has been moved up more than a month from the original schedule, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) stated on Wednesday.

George Erwin Garcia, the chairman of the Comelec, sent a message to reporters saying, “We reset the filing of COCs for BSKE from July 3-7 to August 28 to Sept. 2.”

He stated that one of the factors contributing to their decision to reschedule the scheduled submission was the calls from lawmakers to extend the filing deadline.

Not only in response to their requests, but also because we wanted all sectors—including the Philippine National Police, Armed Forces of the Philippines, and members of our electoral board—to be ready, according to the head of the election body.

He continued, “Likewise, after examining our procedure, we believe that we can quickly resolve annoyance and dq (disqualification) matters before the election.

When asked if the timetable adjustment would have an impact on the events leading up to the polls on October 30, Garcia responded, “No, it’s a manual election so the names of candidates are not printed.”

Francis Tolentino, a senator, had previously pushed the polling organization to move the reporting time from July to August.

Gus Tambunting, a representative for Paranaque City, disagreed with the early establishment of the COC reporting time.

In Resolution No. 10899, the poll authority extended the filing period from July 3 to July 7 to give itself more time to accept and adjudicate disqualification and nuisance claims.
