After beginning shipments to the nation’s capital approximately two weeks earlier, pig farmers in Negros Occidental are now receiving better pricing for live pigs from purchasers in Metro Manila.

“Compared to when they began roughly two weeks ago, prices are now higher. The cost has increased. Despite Cebu’s prohibition and limits, our hog farmers are content, Provincial Administrator Rayfrando Diaz II remarked on Thursday.

Last Monday, Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson claimed that in order to get rid of their supplies, the hog farmers had chosen to sell in Metro Manila, even at a price of PHP20 per kg lower than that in Eastern Visayas.

After Cebu province banned live pigs and pork from Negros Island due to suspected cases of African swine fever (ASF) and prevented them from passing through its ports to shipping live hogs to Eastern Visayas, producers of hogs in the province switched to supplying buyers in the National Capital Region (NCR).

According to the Department of Agriculture’s list, Negros Occidental, which has a PHP6 billion swine sector, is still clear of ASF. (DA).

According to Diaz, Negros Occidental is now the NCR’s supplier of hogs as a result of the national government’s ban on the import of hog products from certain nations.

“For us, we followed the dictates of the market. We acquiesce to market pressures. If one location experiences problems and we are unable to provide them, we find other consumers, he continued.

Negros Occidental and Bacolod City issued a restriction on the admission of all live pigs, boar semen, pork, pork products, and other pork-related things from Cebu province, including Bantayan Island and Camotes Island, after the DA confirmed the ASF infection in Cebu earlier this month.
