E-wallet scams are advised against, and SIM registration has been extended.

On Wednesday, the Philippine National Police-Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) issued a fresh warning to the public about e-wallet scams.

After the deadline for registering the subscriber identity module (SIM), cards were extended, ACG director Brig. Gen. Sidney Hernia issued the warning amid the ongoing spread of these scams distributed via text or social media.

Hernia advised subscribers to be wary of telemarketing calls and messages, especially those that purport to be from reputable companies but are actually scams.

Additionally, he cautioned the public against placing too much trust in e-wallet applications and suggested only doing business with reliable organizations or people.

“The PNP-ACG is dedicated to safeguarding the general public and stopping the recurrence of these scams. To ensure a safe and secure environment in cyberspace and capture cybercriminals, we will continue to conduct various police operations and actions, Hernia said in a statement.

Scammers are preying on the public’s bewilderment and worry as the deadline for SIM card registration approaches in order to deceive them into disclosing their personal information and bank account details.

These con artists frequently adopt the personas of official e-wallet companies or financial institution employees and use alluring rewards or discounts to entice victims into divulging personal information. Once the scammers have the victim’s personal information, they use it to withdraw money from their accounts and then vanish.

On October 10, 2022, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. signed Republic Act 11934, often known as the SIM Registration Act, into law. This law attempts to combat text and internet message scams.

The 180-day SIM card registration period started on December 27 of 2022 and was meant to finish on April 26 but was extended for an additional 90 days.

Existing SIM cards that were in use but weren’t registered during the registration period will be deactivated, whilst new cards must be registered when they are bought.
