NPC and telcos create a task force to fight fraud and improve data security.

A memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed by the National Privacy Commission (NPC) and the leading telecommunications providers (telcos) of the nation to cooperate in ensuring data privacy and combating online fraud and other cybercrimes.

The MOU was signed on Wednesday by the privacy commissioner John Henry Naga, the representative of DITO Telecommunity Adel Tamano, the representative of Globe Telecom Irish Krystle Salandanan-Almeida, and the representative of Smart Communications Leah Camilla Jimenez, according to a statement released by the NPC on Thursday.

According to the document, “by virtue of the Memorandum, a Joint Task Force is established, with NPC serving as the Secretariat, to foster coordination, communication, and implementation of the Parties’ Relative Obligations Regarding Data Privacy and Protection.”

Through a “joint information dissemination campaign” to teach the public about current fraudulent schemes and how to report them, the joint task force will also work toward capacity-building, knowledge-sharing, and intensifying anti-fraud measures.

The MOU between NPC and telcos is a reaction to the urgent need to safeguard the public’s data security and privacy, particularly in light of the prevalence of fraudulent schemes like targeted smishing messages, it stated.

A “more dynamic relationship” between the government and the telecoms would also be created, according to Naga, thanks to the MOU.

We can effectively raise awareness of the importance of ensuring that personal data is safe and secure, as well as the repercussions of not doing so, he said, by cooperating in this shared endeavor.
