Romualdez: Focus on work at home

The “House of the People” is in order, and occasional attempts to undermine it will be repelled.

Assuringly, Speaker Martin Romualdez said in a statement on Sunday amid reports of leadership disputes the previous week that there is no better indication of harmony in the Lower House than the passage on the final reading of at least 29 of the 42 bills that make up President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s legislative agenda.

The creation of specialty centers in the provinces that are comparable to the Lung and Heart Centers in Metro Manila, as well as the Magna Carta bills that seek to protect the rights and advance the welfare of our barangay health workers and seafarers, are among them, according to Romualdez.

Romualdez emphasized that the House must remain focused on finding legislative answers to problems that impact the lives of regular Filipinos.

He remarked, “I would prefer that we remain focused on more critical concerns rather than indulging in political activity in the House of Representatives.

“The UniTeam, of which the House leadership has always been a member, must continue to concentrate on identifying quick fixes for issues facing common Filipinos. The alliance that President Marcos and Vice President Sara Duterte ran in the 2022 elections was referred to in his statement as “political destabilization.” He continued, “The House prefers to focus on fixing low power supply, high electricity rates, telco troubles, and unstable commodity prices instead of political destabilization.

House Bill No. 6336, often known as the New Agrarian Emancipation Bill, was enacted in December 2022 with support from all 245 parliamentarians present. It allows ARBs to forgive their outstanding debts.

A similar measure, the proposed Magna Carta for Barangay Health Workers, which would provide incentives and benefits such as hazard allowance, transportation allowance, subsistence allowance, one-time retirement cash incentive, health benefits, insurance coverage and benefits, vacation and maternity leaves, cash gifts, was unanimously approved in December.

House Bill 7751, also known as the proposed Department of Health Specialty Centers Act, was enacted on May 8 to make “specialized health care accessible to our people in the provinces, especially the poor.” Romualdez was the bill’s author.

NHA’s charter renewal

Also on Sunday, Romualdez guaranteed the approval of a bill that would extend the National Housing Authority’s (NHA) charter, which expires in 2025, to support President Marcos in completing the nation’s 6.15 million housing backlog by building a million new homes annually from 2028 onward.

“It is our commitment to ensure the success of President Marcos’ housing program that would bring a meaningful change and significant impact to the lives of ordinary Filipino people,” stated Romualdez.

“The proposal will spur development and address every Filipino family’s need for decent housing.”

House Bill No. 8156, or An Act Strengthening the National Housing Authority, Extending its Corporate Term, and Amending for this Purpose Presidential Decree No. 757, was introduced by Romualdez and Senior Deputy Majority Leader Sandro Marcos of Ilocos Norte’s First District on May 16.

Within six years, it is anticipated that 30 million Filipinos will benefit from the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development’s (DHSUD) “Pambansang Pabahay para sa Pilipino (National Housing for Filipinos)” initiative.

DHSUD signed memorandums of understanding with 47 local government entities from September to December last year to collaborate on the housing program.

zero coup

After Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo of the Pampanga 2nd District was demoted on Wednesday night from Senior Deputy Speaker to Deputy Speaker and replaced by her provincial mate Rep. Aurelio Gonzales Jr. of the Third District, rumors of a House “coup” began to circulate.

Arroyo minimized the action as a House prerogative.

“Such incidents are a natural part of Philippine politics, as I have discovered over my three decades as a politician. However, I do not want any tendencies toward early political activity to be precipitated or increased. It would be terrible if early political maneuvering caused any weakening of the enormous mandate that the UniTeam, led by our President, received in the 2022 elections. We have only been in office for a little over a year. After all, the President stood for unity during his campaign, ” Arroyo said in a statement on Friday.

No wound needs to be healed because none was caused, according to House Deputy Speaker Ralph Recto of the Sixth District of Batangas province.

In another statement, Recto added, “This is a storm in a teacup that won’t wash away a strong alliance between close partners who share a common vision of a prosperous and peaceful country.” They will soon emerge from the miscommunication’s haze, rekindle their commitment to working together, and any attempts to put a wedge between them will have failed. There are so many issues in the nation. On solutions, Congress is concentrating. It won’t gorge itself on plots.

Romualdez argued that the government should concentrate on the issues plaguing Filipinos rather than engaging in partisan politics.

If we can pay greater attention to the concerns of everyday Filipinos, Romualdez said, “We will rise together.” “Kung mapagtutuunan natin nang mas maraming oras ang paghahanap ng solusyon sa mga tunay na suliranin ng karaniwang Pilipino,” Romualdez remarked.
