UN predicts 43K deaths from armed violence in 2022.
The chief of the UN warned that violence is destroying lives worldwide on Tuesday, estimating that 43,000 people had perished due to armed conflicts in 2022.
During a UN Security Council discussion on protecting civilians in armed conflicts, Antonio Guterres stated, “94% of their victims in populated areas last year were civilians.” “A total of 100 million refugees have been displaced from their homes due to conflict, violence, abuses of human rights, and persecution.”
More than 117 million people also experienced severe hunger due to war and insecurity.
He remarked, “The terrible truth is that the world is not upholding its obligations under international humanitarian law to protect civilians.”
Those who commit war crimes must be held accountable, according to Guterres.
