NNC lists three priorities for eradicating hunger.

To reach its aim of eradicating hunger by 2030, the government must focus on maintaining food security, controlling inflation, and bolstering multisectoral cooperation, according to a statement released on Wednesday by the National Nutrition Council (NNC).

Officer-in-charge of the NNC Nutrition Surveillance Division Ellen Ruth Abella mentioned the three key actions during a Laging Handa program.

The suggestion was made following the signing of Executive Order (EO) 27 on May 18 by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., which reorganized the Task Force on Zero Hunger, the organization tasked with ensuring the execution of “coordinated, responsive, and effective” governmental policies, initiatives, and projects to eradicate hunger.

Abella stated that to reduce the danger of malnutrition among Filipinos, the government must address issues with food security.

“We have three suggestions that could be considered priority actions to achieve President Marcos’ zero hunger policy,” she added. “May tatlo po kaming mungkahi na puwedeng maging priority action or focus para matupad po ang zero hunger policy ni President Marcos.”

“First is addressing the challenges on food security, which is also the banner program of our President and can be connected to malnutrition,” Abella said. “Una po ‘yung patuloy na pagtugon po natin sa hamon ng food security, na siya din po iyong banner program ng ating Pangulo at kaakibat nito ay pagtugon sa malnutrition.”

Abella emphasized the necessity of taking the appropriate actions to reduce the cost of basic commodities, particularly of several food staples like rice, eggs, and onions.

She continued, “It means we have to fix our food systems and network to ensure enough food supply for every Filipino family.

According to Abella, ending hunger also calls for multisectoral coordination and cooperation.

She stated that to achieve zero hunger, the government and its allies in the corporate sector must work together to implement crucial action plans.

“If we do not support one another, the government, and important sectors, we will not succeed,” Abella said. “If we do not support one another, the government, and important sectors, we will not succeed.”

EO 101, which was signed in 2020 and established the Task Force on Zero Hunger, the task of developing a National Food Policy (NFP), which would set national priorities based on a thorough understanding of the issue of hunger and related problems, has been delegated to the Task Force.

The NFP will also offer a plan for reaching zero hunger that considers already-passed laws and other regulations and duties under international law and treaties.

Initiatives to reduce hunger, achieve food security, enhance nutrition, and support sustainable agriculture will be identified under the NFP.

The task force was reformed by Marcos’ EO 27 to move the lead to the secretary of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the executive director of the NNC. The now-defunct Office of the Cabinet Secretary had previously led the task force.

By the first quarter of 2024, the DSWD plans to roll out its “Walang Gutom 2027” food stamp program, which will help at least 1 million low-income households by the issue of EO 27.

The program will undergo a pilot test from July to December of this year.

On the other hand, the NNC would develop a Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition, including methods for addressing food insecurity and malnutrition.
