DA warns farmers and LGUs about pests and diseases associated with the drought.

In light of the emergence of the El Nino phenomenon, the Department of Agriculture (DA) in the Western Visayas Region (DA-6) has warned farmers and local government units (LGUs) of illnesses and pests infesting crops.

The extended drought period, intense heat, and scarce water supply, according to the DA regional officer-in-charge, Engr. Jose Albert Barrogo, may favor the occurrence of diseases and pests like rats, black bugs, and locusts.

“We enjoin everyone, especially the front lines, including the offices of the provincial, city, and municipal agriculturists, to undertake an information campaign, field monitoring, and pest prevention again to avoid damage to crop pests and diseases,” he said in an interview on Monday. “In anticipation of the coming El Nino.”

According to a warning issued by the DA Regional Agri-Fishery Information Section, locusts can destroy all crops that are in their vegetative to mature phases. At the same time, rats can harm all crops at any stage.

Similarly, the armyworm can cause harm to high-value crops like rice, corn, and corn at any stage.

While the black rice bug and brown planthopper attack paddy during the vegetative to reproductive stages, the rice stemborer always targets paddy.

Prevention techniques

For armyworm, stemborer, brown planthopper, and black bug, preventative measures include synchronous planting in cluster regions, plowing afflicted fields promptly after harvest, and observing the fallow season.

Before the typical planting season, it is also advised to kill rats physically, destroy their burrows, maintain clean fields, and take other community-based rodent control measures.

In case local governments and farmers want technical assistance or other interventions, Barrogo reaffirmed that the Regional Crop Protection Center is also ready to help.
