PH willing to return the remains of Japanese soldiers from World War II
According to Benjamin Abalos Jr., secretary of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), the Philippines is prepared to help Japan return the remains of Japanese soldiers who perished in the nation during World War II.
In a statement, Abalos added that to assure that the recovery and repatriation will go smoothly, the DILG and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) will work closely with Japan.
It is estimated that the country still contains the remains of more than 300,000 Japanese soldiers who perished between 1942 and 1945 while serving in World War II.
“We are prepared to assist them in recovering the remains of their fallen soldiers,” he said, adding that Japan “remains one of the closest partners and allies of the Philippine government.”
On Thursday, Abalos met with representatives of the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare (MHLW) led by the Minister for Economic Affairs Nihei Daisuke of the Japanese Embassy.
Raphael Hermoso, the DFA’s deputy assistant secretary, also attended the meeting.
The DILG is strategically positioned to ensure that the repatriation process would be carefully coordinated with local government entities, where some of the remains are located, because it is in charge of leading the repatriation effort, according to Abalos.
According to Abalos, the DILG will mobilize its personnel and resources to help Japan with the repatriation by the MOC signed in May 2018 between the governments of the Philippines and Japan.
The MOC comprises gathering, handling, storing, and appropriately shipping the remains.
