Near NAIA, security issues plague an abandoned hotel.
The abandoned Philippine Village Hotel (PVH) has caused the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) great concern, according to the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA).
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) stated in a news release on Monday that MIAA officer-in-charge Bryan Co wrote to Pasay City Mayor Imelda Rubiano on June 20 stating that the abandoned PVH “has increasingly compromised the building’s security, making it susceptible to trespassing, vandalism, and other criminal activitiesโฆ[including] the possibility of terrorist activities being planned or executed from within the structure,” endangering the operations of the DOTr.
According to the announcement, the PVH is hazardous to nearby structures, including NAIA Terminal 2 and the 250th Presidential Airlift Wing.
The Philippine Village Hotel Inc. and other parties with interests in the PVH have reportedly blocked MIAA’s attempts to secure the property.
Co highlighted two instances where MIAA personnel and equipment deployed to put out fires in the PVH area were denied access.
He claimed that on November 20, 2021, MIAA’s fire engines that were responding to a basement fire in PVH were denied access.
On June 7, the MIAA fire brigade was only permitted entry with the help of the Airport Police Department 15 minutes after their arrival.
Co asked that MIAA be given permission to protect the PVH region from both natural and man-made calamities as well as criminal elements.
Additionally, he urged Rubiano to evaluate the hotel’s structural stability to assess the possibility of structural failure, collapse, and other damage that would necessitate demolition.
Due to the hotel’s proximity to the passenger terminal and the regions where planes move, the MIAA highlighted the earthquake in Metro Manila on June 15 as evidence of the importance of engineering examination.
To ensure the safety and security of the airport complex, everyone involved in its operations, and the general public, the DOTr indicated that this poses what MIAA defines as grave hazards that might be minimized with the assistance of the Pasay City LGU (local government unit).
