Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa stated on Tuesday that the Philippines is expected to become malaria-free within the next two to three years. Herbosa shared this positive development during a press briefing at the Palace.

He highlighted that the majority of reported malaria cases originate from “high mountainous areas” in Palawan province. However, the rest of the country has already achieved zero cases of malaria.

“Most of the Philippines is now malaria-free,” Herbosa remarked. “There are still cases in Palawan, particularly in the mountainous area. The urban areas of Palawan, such as Puerto Princesa, no longer have reported cases.”

Herbosa mentioned that the Department of Health will continue its efforts in detection and treatment programs to address the remaining active cases of malaria in Palawan.

In 2022, there were 3,157 confirmed indigenous malaria cases in the country.

Malaria is a life-threatening yet preventable and curable disease caused by parasites transmitted through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there were approximately 247 million cases of malaria and 619,000 malaria-related deaths globally in 2021.
