Covid instances are at an all-time high in the NCR, according to QC, while demand for tests is at an all-time high.

Residents in Quezon City are requesting a large number of free reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) or swab tests, as the city has the greatest number of new coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases in the National Capital Region (NCR).

According to the OCTA Research Group, QC had the newest Covid-19 instances on Wednesday, with 1,781, followed by Manila (1,407) and Makati (605).

QC is Metro Manila’s largest city.

The daily optimism rate in the NCR is presently at 45 percent, according to the report.

“On January 6, 15,000 to 16,000 new Covid-19 infections are expected in the Philippines, with 10,000 to 11,000 new cases in the NCR. This would surpass the previous high of 9,031 sets on September 11, 2021, in the NCR. And the uptick isn’t over yet. By January 7, the country is projected to have had over 20,000 new cases,” stated OCTA Research Group fellow Dr. Guido David in a tweet on Thursday.

Dr. Rolly Cruz, the chief of the QC Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance Unit (CESU), said swab testing is in great demand right now.

“We noticed a rapid spike in the number of persons wanting to get tested,” Cruz added, “mainly from those who are experiencing symptoms like colds and coughs, which are also common during this season.”

He went on to say that the increase in the number of people who wanted to be tested had an impact on the time it took for test results to be released.

Aside from the local government’s free swab testing, commercial laboratories have seen a rise in requests for RT-PCR tests.

The majority of swab test requests come from people who have had flu-like symptoms or have been exposed to a confirmed positive person in the days or weeks leading up to the holidays.

Individuals with moderate to severe symptoms, such as trouble breathing, those who are still unvaccinated against Covid-19, and those who live in densely populated and high-risk locations, are being prioritized, according to Cruz.

Those who are unable to take a swab test appointment but are experiencing symptoms are advised to isolate themselves from their relatives.

“We advise QCitizens who have flu-like symptoms including colds, runny noses, coughs, or fever to isolate themselves from their family members as soon as possible,” Cruz stated.

Meanwhile, Mayor Joy Belmonte of Quebec has urged residents to get the Covid-19 booster shot as soon as possible to strengthen their disease protection.

She did, however, tell residents that the city government is prepared for another surge, saying that they have begun building district hospitals, quarantine and isolation facilities, testing locations, and vaccination sites to accommodate more people.

The local government has documented a total of 5,607 active Covid-19 instances as of Wednesday, accounting for 3.01 percent of all active cases.

The total number of recoveries was 178,834 (96.11%), while the total number of deaths was 1,632 (0.88%).
