The number of cases of Omicron may double in February, according to the Department of Health.
The Omicron coronavirus variety is being transmitted in the community in the National Capital Region, according to the Department of Health, through a peak in the number of cases is not predicted until next month.
Despite a lag in whole-genome sequencing, local cases of the Omicron variation have been found, according to DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire in a televised public briefing on Saturday.
When an infectious disease spreads widely inside a group, this is known as community transmission.
To date, 43 Omicron variant cases have been confirmed in the country, 21 of which are local and 22 of which are from international travelers.
Dr. Rabindra Abeyasinghe, a World Health Organization national representative, previously stated that the Omicron variety may soon overtake Delta as the prevalent form in the Philippines.
According to Vergeire, the number of active cases could double by the end of the month.
“We have yet to see the peak na baka mangyari sa dulo ng buwan na ito (which might happen at the end of this month) or even later in February,” she continued.
Vergeire stated that the government’s current aim is to efficiently manage available resources, taking into account all aspects.
On Saturday, 39,004 new infections were reported across the country, bringing the total number of active cases to 280,813 and the total number of cases to 3,168,379.
There were additionally 23,613 new cases recovered, for a total of 2,834,708, accounting for 89.5 percent of all cases.
