In the ‘no vax, no ride’ campaign, Leeway is looking for AstraZeneca recipients.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) announced on Thursday that it will look into offering persons who have obtained AstraZeneca coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccines special consideration while implementing the “no vaccination, no ride” policy.

“Since November to December last year, andami na nating bakuna (we have a lot of vaccines), different brands,” DILG spokesperson Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya said in a television interview. “However, this is also a valid concern, and we will raise this one again to the other agencies โ€” DOTr (Department of Transportation) and DOLE (Department of Labor and Employment) โ€” so that we can come up with the policy with them.”

This, as the government has instituted a 30-day grace period for unvaccinated and partially vaccinated personnel to ride public transit in Metro Manila starting Wednesday.

Beginning February 26, however, only fully vaccinated individuals will be permitted to use public transportation in the region.

Those who were recently immunized with AstraZeneca jabs as their first dose will have to wait four to twelve weeks for their second injection, which is significantly longer than the 28 to 30 days interval for other vaccine brands.

Malaya, on the other hand, urged those who haven’t been vaccinated to try as many different brands as possible instead of AstraZeneca.

“They must request their LGUs (local government units) to vaccinate them with a different brand of Covid-19 vaccine that will allow them to be vaccinated 30 days later so that they do not fall under this problem because if AstraZeneca sila (if they are injected with AstraZeneca), they will definitely not be fully vaccinated (once the 30-day window expires),” Malaya said.

He also believes that this will no longer be an issue now that more Covid-19 vaccination brands are available in the country.

Malaya added that the “no vax, no ride” policy could no longer be delayed, hence the decision to come up with a 30-day grace period for the unvaccinated and those partially vaccinated.

“From the beginning, the rationale has always been twofold: first, to protect the unvaccinated themselves, and second, to keep the healthcare system from becoming overburdened,” he continued.

He also stated that the “no vaccine, no ride” policy will only be used under Alert Level 3 situations.
