In southern Negros, about 70% of houses now have power.

According to a situation update published by the Office of Civil Defense-Western Visayas (OCD-6) on Thursday, power has been restored to 68.93 percent of houses affected by Typhoon Odette’s attack in southern Negros Occidental in December.

The information is based on a power restoration report filed by the Negros Occidental Electric Cooperative (NOCECO) on January 24. NOCECO’s coverage region includes 17 cities and municipalities.

Electricity has been restored to 124,710 of the 180,921 households with active connections, leaving 56,211 households still waiting to be reconnected.

In their report, NOCECO stated that the “target date of a full restoration for barangays in town proper is January 31, 2022.”

Typhoon Odette pounded Negros Occidental overnight on December 16, collapsing electricity poles and breaking power lines across the province.

Residents in southern Negros were particularly hard struck, with torrential rainfall and severe flooding.

Six of the 17 impacted local government units in the south, including Himamaylan City, La Carlota City, Pontevedra, Pulupandan, San Enrique, and Valladolid municipalities, have already totally restored or 100 percent power supply.

The hardest-hit areas, such as Candoni (21.77 percent), Sipalay City (37.86 percent), Kabankalan City (48.40 percent), and Cauayan (48.68 percent), have the lowest number of reenergized households.

In terms of the number of barangays with electricity restored, NOCECO stated that a total of 83.12%, or 256, of the 308 impacted barangays had power restored.

Cauayan has the fewest reenergized barangays, with only 60 percent (15 out of 25), followed by La Castellana, which has 61.54 percent (8 out of 13).

Typhoon Odette also caused an estimated PHP344.146 million in damage to NOCECO’s power infrastructure, according to data.
