As the Philippines opens to international tourists, the Department of Tourism will maintain a “tight eye” on the situation.

On Monday, a DOT official stated that after the country opens to fully vaccinated overseas tourists on February 10, the government will verify that tourists and tourism enterprises conform to minimal public health standards.

DOT Secretary Bernadette Puyat said the DOT, other concerned national agencies, local government units (LGUs), and other tourism stakeholders will work together to avert another increase in cases brought on by an inflow of international tourists during a press conference in Malacanang.

“We will be actively monitoring changes in the industry and keeping a close eye on tourism establishments, ‘yun kasi ‘yong mandate namin (since that is our job),” Puyat added.

She stated that these international tourists will be needed to be completely vaccinated, have negative RT-PCR tests 48 hours prior to departure, and will not be subjected to quarantine.

“Reopening our borders to international guests in a matter of days would be the clearest indication yet that the county’s tourism economy is on the mend,” Puyat said.

On the other side, she stated that attempts to vaccinate local tourism employees began in July 2021, with booster vaccinations beginning this month.

She stated that all workers and residents on Boracay Island, a renowned tourist destination, have been vaccinated against Covid-19 to protect their safety.

“Halos lahat doon sa Boracay ay binakunahan na, and nasa booster na sila sila right now.” In fact, pati ‘yung mga ages 12 to 17 binakunahan na rin (Almost everyone in Boracay has been vaccinated and is having boosters right now.) Those between the ages of 12 and 17 are also vaccinated),” Puyat stated.

She said the DOT has been ensuring compliance of tourism establishments with minimum health standards against Covid-19 through its DOT accreditation since the beginning of the pandemic, as required by law and ordered by the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF).

“Since 2020, mayroon tayong mga minimum health and safety protocols sa lahat ng mga hotels, resorts, and accommodation establishmentsโ€”kasama dito ‘yung DOHโ€”’yun talaga ay ini-implement natin (Since 2020, we’ve had minimum health and safety protocols in all hotels, resorts, and accommodation establishmentsโ€”kasama dito ‘yung DOHโ€”’y

The IATF previously announced that effective February 10, leisure travelers from visa-free nations will be able to enter the country, a measure aimed at reviving the tourism industry.

These visitors must also have a passport that is valid for at least six months and an outward ticket to return to their home country or their next destination.

As the DOH and other health experts see a drop in Covid-19 cases, the National Capital Region, Batanes, Bulacan, Cavite, and Rizal in Luzon; Biliran and Southern Leyte in the Visayas; and Basilan in Mindanao will be placed under the less restrictive Alert Level 2 beginning February 1.
