There is no evidence that the Omicron version is more transmissible: WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced Sunday that there is no proof of the new Omicron coronavirus strain’s transmissibility or severity.

“It’s not apparent whether Omicron is more transmissible (easier to transfer from person to person) than other variations, including Delta,” the organization stated in a statement.

The WHO stated that an increase in the number of people testing positive and the rate of hospitalization in South Africa, where the new variant was first reported and thought to have originated, does not necessarily mean a higher rate of transmissibility or severity of the strain, noting that “this may be due to an increase in overall numbers of people becoming infected rather than a result of specific infection with Omicron.”

“At this time, there is no evidence that symptoms linked with Omicron are different from those associated with other variations,” the statement continued.

Based on limited knowledge, the WHO further warned that persons who have already been infected with Covid-19 may be more susceptible to re-infection with Omicron than with other strains of concern, highlighting the need for greater research into the strain to better understand it.

While research into the efficacy of Covid-19 vaccinations and current tests on the new variation is ongoing, the drug used to treat the coronavirus can still be used to treat Omicron, according to the report.
