Vaccination of children will continue despite a court order, according to the government.
Despite a petition filed by two parents to block the immunization, the Department of Health (DOH) and the pandemic task force confirmed Thursday that the pilot vaccination of youngsters aged 5 to 11 years old will go forward.
The Department of Health and the National Task Force against Coronavirus Disease 2019 (NTF-Covid-19) issued a joint statement saying they respect the parents’ right to launch a lawsuit and will wait for the legal procedure to play out.
“However, in terms of the national government, we remain unwavering in our commitment to defend all sections of society, including children and other vulnerable groups,” according to the statement.
“As a result,” it continued, “we will continue with the immunization rollout for the specified age range as scheduled.”
Dominic Almelor and Girlie Samonte, who have children aged 5 to 11, petitioned the Quezon City Regional Trial Court (RTC) for a temporary restraining order and/or a writ of a preliminary injunction against the drive.
The complainants are concerned about DOH memorandum No. 2022-0041, which states that “the State may act as parents patriae and offer the requisite consent” if a parent or guardian refuses to give consent notwithstanding the child’s desire and readiness to be vaccinated.
The outcome of a thorough investigation
Meanwhile, the DOH and NTF emphasized that the rollout for children aged 5 to 11 is the product of extensive research by health professionals and has been approved in numerous countries, including the United States.
“All Covid-19 vaccines licensed by the Food and Drug Administration have been proven to be safe and effective, as we always underscore. Over 8.1 million children have previously been vaccinated around the world, with no reports of deaths or major side effects “they stated
Since the vaccination rollout began in October 2021, no adverse events have been reported among the roughly nine million minors aged 12 to 17 who have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
“We have already received over 100,000 pre-registrations in the Philippines for the immunization rollout for children aged five to eleven. This figure represents parents’ willingness and trust in having their children vaccinated against the fatal virus “they stated
They also stated that “parental consent documents are necessary for all minors” who will be vaccinated, as well as that further precautions have been made to assure their safety.
They claim that the vaccines for children aged 5 to 11 have been modified, which means that the dosage is lower than for older age groups.
“Vaccinating them is essential if we are to achieve our goal of protecting all members of the Filipino family, including children, adults, and the elderly. This would allow us to continue the safe reopening of schools and other public areas while also ensuring our country’s full economic recovery “they stated
Due to logistical obstacles, the pilot immunization of children aged 5 to 11 years old was moved from February 4 to February 7.
According to the NTF, the FDA-approved Covid-19 vaccinations assigned for this age range are experiencing a little delay in delivery.
The trial run has been postponed due to the arrival of the first shipment of the reformulated low-dosing Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccines on Friday evening.
The government plans to vaccinate 12.74 million minors aged 12 to 17 and 15.56 million children aged 5 to 11.
