On the 158th anniversary of Gat Andres Bonifacio’s birth, Secretary of the Department of National Defense (DND) Delfin Lorenzana urged Filipinos to follow in the hero’s footsteps by protecting the country’s freedom.

In a statement, Lorenzana said, “May we all, like Bonifacio, become devoted stewards of our nation’s freedom and dedicate ourselves in the service of our fellowmen.” “The Department of National Defense joins the nation in honoring Andres Bonifacio’s life and legacy. He was a guy from humble origins who dared to dream of a free and independent Philippines.”

Bonifacio is remembered on his birthday, Nov. 30, 1863, rather than his death date, May 10, 1897, because he is known as the “Father of the Philippine Revolution.”

This is due to the fact that he died at the hands of his native countrymen, rather than at the hands of foreign colonists.

To ensure the Philippines’ independence from Spain, he founded the secret revolutionary movement “Kataas-taasang, Kagalang-galangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan,” more widely known as “Katipunan.”

Bonifacio was a top Katipunan officer who rose to the position of “Supremo” (Supreme Leader) in 1895.

Many Filipinos were inspired by the Katipunan to join the movement, which grew to be the most powerful revolutionary force the Spaniards faced.

Lorenzana believes that Filipinos should follow Bonifacio’s example in these difficult times.

“Today, we take courage in overcoming our current challenges, inspired by the Great Plebeian’s patriotism and perseverance. He created the foundation for our republic’s establishment, emphasizing the significance of everyone of us fulfilling our own responsibilities while working together toward a common objective,” Lorenzana remarked.

The 30th of November is a regular holiday under Republic Act 2946 to mark Bonifacio’s birth anniversary.
