On Friday, the Japanese Embassy in Manila announced that some medical equipment had been sent to the Balete Rural Health Unit in Batangas, which is looking to expand its activities.

The distribution of equipment valued at USD98,880 (about PHP5.2 million) was approved in 2018 as part of Japan’s official development aid (ODA) under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).

An automated blood chemistry analyzer and an ultrasound machine are among the items on the list.

Balete RHU is the town’s major public health center, serving roughly 6,000 patients per year with outpatient primary health care.

Access to medical treatments was limited at the time due to the low capacity of accessible medical equipment.

Previously, the company’s blood chemistry analyzer could only handle at least 30% of caseloads from patients with diabetes, hypertension, and angina. Pregnant women were also compelled to go to nearby towns for prenatal treatment due to the lack of ultrasound machines.

“Now that the project has been formally turned over to the RHU, Balete residents, including 1,400 patients who require the use of the fully-automated chemistry analyzer and 100 patients who require the use of the ultrasound machine on a yearly basis, will be able to benefit from improved medical services and access,” the Embassy said.

The GGP was established in 1989 to assist the Philippines in reducing poverty and engaging in grassroots activities. According to the Embassy, the GGP has implemented 548 grassroots projects, including the latest program.

“Japan believes that these initiatives will promote Japan-Philippine friendship and contribute to the long-term sustainability of strategic partnerships between the two nations,” it said.
