Over central PH, ‘Odette’ has been seen spawning rough seas.
Severe Tropical Storm Rai, which will be dubbed Odette in the Philippines, is expected to deliver strong winds, making sailing in the central Philippines unsafe for small and large vessels.
‘Rai’ is expected to impact the Philippines Tuesday night, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
According to PAGASA weather forecaster Nikos Penaranda, rough seas will persist, with winds causing waves of up to 4 meters high in open seas, notably in the Bohol Sea, which borders the Eastern Visayas-Caraga region, where “Odette” may make landfall.
According to Penaranda, such winds will cause the Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 3 to be raised in several parts of the Philippines.
“Vessels will not be able to go there if that happens,” he stated.
As of 10 a.m. Tuesday, PAGASA had detected “Rai” 1,165 kilometers east of Mindanao, still outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
It was moving west-northwestward at 30 kilometers per hour (kph), with sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour around its core and gustiness of up to 115 kilometers per hour.
“Rai” is expected to build into Typhoon Odette, with maximum winds of roughly 155 kph before making landfall on Thursday, according to Penaranda.
“‘Odette’ could also cross the central Philippines as a typhoon, bringing heavy and even torrential rain,” he warned.
Rainfall, according to Penaranda, can cause flooding and landslides in parts of the Philippines that are vulnerable to these dangers.
The trough of “Rai” may already be bringing cloudy skies with sporadic rain showers and thunderstorms to Eastern Visayas, Caraga, and Davao Region, according to PAGASA’s daily forecast on Tuesday.
Flooding and landslides are probable during moderate to severe rainfall, according to the report.
Rain showers are expected in other parts of the country due to the northeast monsoon, or “amihan,” and localized thunderstorms, according to the weather bureau.
