DOST provides Pangasinan with an internet-free information source.

As of February 7, the Department of Science and Technology’s Ilocos regional office (DOST-1) handed 136 units of Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosk Stations (Starbooks) to students in remote locations.

DOST-1 Starbooks regional deployment officer Mary Ann Belen said the units were handed out for free to academic institutions, business institutions, and local government units (LGUs) in a phone interview on Wednesday.

“Starbooks is a stand-alone information source aimed at people who have limited or no access to science and technology (S&T) resources. It contains thousands of digitized science and technology resources in a variety of formats (text, video, and audio) that can be accessed without an internet connection,” she explained.

Television documentaries, thesis, investigatory projects, various DOST projects, and technologies, among other things, are included, she added.

Agno Central School, Calomboyan Elementary School, Juan Nio Elementary School, and Aloleng Elementary School received Starbooks at the province’s most recent awarding ceremony in Agno town.

Prior to the deployment of the units, users were given training and orientation.

“It will benefit both students and teachers as they continue their academic lives despite the pandemic’s varied hurdles,” Belen added.

The DOST-Science and Technology Information Institute launched Starbooks in 2011.

At the International Librarians Reception at the San Francisco Library in California in 2015, Starbooks received the American Library Association Presidential Citation for Innovative International Library Projects.
