A $2 million ADB funding will help with the PH ‘Odette’ relief effort.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has granted a $2 million grant to assist the Philippine government in responding to the devastation caused by Storm Odette, the strongest typhoon to hit the country in 2021, across central and southern provinces.
The award from the Asian Development Bank’s Asia Pacific Disaster Response Fund will help roughly 15,000 households, or about 75,000 individuals, in Visayas and Mindanao who were badly affected by the typhoon on December 16.
Food vouchers will be provided to specific communities, and beneficiaries will be able to exchange them for food at designated markets. The award also includes logistical support for the distribution of food assistance.
“In the midst of the Covid-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) epidemic, Typhoon Odette’s devastation to housing, agriculture, and infrastructure has made life more difficult for Filipinos in impacted areas,” said ADB Director General for Southeast Asia Ramesh Subramaniam. “This support will assist in meeting the humanitarian needs of those communities, particularly those in rural areas.”
The food aid is being delivered in collaboration with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).
It builds on the World Food Programme’s existing collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare and Development to deliver emergency relief to typhoon-affected areas.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council estimated that the typhoon damaged agriculture, public infrastructure, and private property to the tune of PHP24.6 billion (almost $500 million).
Several areas are still cut off due to destroyed roads and bridges, and power has yet to be restored.
More than 1.7 million homes were destroyed in eight provinces by the category 5 typhoon.
According to the United Nations, the storm impacted approximately 9.9 million people throughout the six worst-affected regions, with nearly 144,000 people still without a house as of January 28, 2022.
President Rodrigo Roa Duterte announced a state of calamity in the six regions in December 2021 for a year to expedite rescue, relief, and reconstruction efforts.
