On Wednesday, the world’s largest cut diamond was sold for more than USD4 million (PHP200 million) at Sotheby’s in the United Kingdom.

From Feb. 3 to 9, the incredibly rare diamond known as “The Enigma” came up for auction.

A bidder paid £3.16 million (USD4.27 million or PHP213.5 million) in bitcoin for the rare fancy black carbonado diamond, which weighed 555.55 carats and had precisely 55 facets.

In 2006, the Guinness Book of World Records declared “The Enigma” to be the world’s largest cut diamond.

Carbonados, unlike most diamonds, are found in alluvial, sedimentary deposits near or on the Earth’s surface, according to the auction house.

According to the auction notice, “this, together with their peculiar mineral make-up, suggests plausible extraterrestrial origins, either from meteoric strikes resulting in natural chemical vapor deposition or from diamond-bearing asteroids crashing with the Earth.”

The diamond “outweighs both the Great Star of Africa’s 530.2 carats and the Golden Jubilee’s 545.67 carats, making it not only one of the world’s largest fancy black natural-color diamonds but also the world’s largest faceted diamond to ever come on the auction market,” according to the report.

Black diamonds are assumed to have developed as a result of a meteoric impact or a diamond-bearing asteroid colliding with Earth roughly 3.8 billion years ago and are exclusively found in Brazil and the Central Republic of Africa.

The auction house estimated the sale price to be between £3-5 million.
