International passenger arrivals are gradually increasing, according to BI.

Despite a large uptick in international arrivals on Thursday, Bureau of Immigration (BI) spokesperson Dana Sandoval said the number of inbound foreign tourists and business visitors is not expected to surpass pre-pandemic levels in the first few months.

“We believe that the first ones to arrive will be Filipino families, partners, and loved ones who have long awaited an opportunity to rejoin and be together,” Sandoval told the Philippine News Agency.

The BI noted in a news release that inbound international travelers increased dramatically from 4,816 on Wednesday to over 7,000 on Thursday, including overseas Filipino workers.

Sandoval said the Border Patrol’s manpower is ready for the flood of entering visitors now that the country’s borders have reopened after nearly two years of shutdown due to Covid-19 pandemic restrictions.

“We were having some issues a few weeks ago because many of our front-liners were infected with Covid-19. Thankfully, most of them have now recovered “she stated

She claimed that after battling the virus, 400 BI employees have returned to work at the airport.

Jaime Morente, the BI Commissioner, expressed his optimism that the country’s transition to the “new normal” will proceed smoothly.

“We see this as the beginning of the tourism industry’s revival, which we hope will regain the strength it had in past years,” Morente added.

On Thursday afternoon, Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat traveled to the NAIA Terminal 3 for an ocular inspection.

In a press conference, Romulo-Puyat stated that reopening the borders will benefit the tourism industry and restore jobs to individuals who have been displaced.

“Most tourism workers had already been immunized (against Covid-19) since they genuinely wanted tourism to reopen,” she stated in Filipino.

Beginning Thursday, the government would allow fully vaccinated foreigners from visa-free countries to enter the country.

Lady Marie Dela Torre, who moved to Las Vegas in 2015, applauded the government’s relaxation of inbound travel restrictions.

“I’m looking forward to returning home because I won’t have to be quarantined any longer. This will allow me to save money while also maximizing my three-month vacation “The PNA was informed by Dela Torre.

She stated that because to travel limitations in 2021, she had to reschedule her first trip to the Philippines in seven years in April of this year.
