According to figures released on Tuesday by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), there were 917 million tourists who traveled abroad in total in 2017. This represents an increase of 101.6% from the previous year.
International visitor numbers increased across the board, with the Middle East seeing the biggest improvement, up 83% from pre-Covid levels.
Thanks to hosting events like Expo 2020 in Dubai and the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, as well as the well-attended Muslim Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, visitor arrivals to the area increased 144.4 percent year over year in 2022.
By 2022, Europe will have made 80% of what it did before the virus, with 585 million tourists arriving there.
Due to mobility constraints brought on by Covid, Asia, and the Pacific only made up about 23% of their pre-virus visitation while Africa and the Americas recovered over 65 percent of them.
It is anticipated that this year’s international visitor arrivals will be between 80% and 95% of pre-pandemic levels, with the Middle East and Europe expected to approach those levels.
The UNWTO anticipates that China’s elimination of the Covid-19 limitations will be beneficial for Asian destinations, especially in the short term, depending on the cost and accessibility of air travel, visa requirements, and local Covid-related restrictions.
It remembered that, as of mid-January, 32 nations—mostly in Asia and Europe—had placed particular travel restrictions on citizens traveling from China.
It is anticipated that strong US travel demand and a strong euro will support more travel to Europe.
