CITY OF COTABATO – On Tuesday, police in Maguindanao issued a warning to the public about the possibility of counterfeit money proliferating during the election season.

Following the arrest of a lady who used counterfeit money in the town’s public market on Monday afternoon, Police Maj. Dareen Tolosa, town police chief of Upi, Maguindanao, issued the warning.

According to Tolosa, a woman named Momena Datuwata Piang was arrested after merchants complained about getting counterfeit money from her in exchange for goods and services.

Police discovered PHP7,000 in counterfeit money on the offender, whose two accomplices managed to flee the scene.

Piang, of Datu Salibo, Maguindanao, has two accomplices in their illegal market activities.

She only identified them as “Baikong or Bainot,” a female from Talayan, Maguindanao, and “John,” the driver of a car the suspect had rented to travel to UPI town.

According to Tolosa, the suspects used bogus bills to defraud roughly ten market vendors.

Piang has been charged with violating the Revised Penal Code, as well as illegal possession and use of counterfeit treasury or banknotes and other forms of credit.

Police requested the public to check the security features of the new generation currency banknotes using the “Feel-Look-Tilt” approach, as recommended by the Bangko Sentral Ng Pilipinas (BSP).

It also warned the public that bogus money could be used to entice voters in the upcoming elections.

The police head of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, Brig. Gen. Arthur Cabalona, has praised the Upi police for responding immediately to victims’ complaints.

“Double-check for counterfeit or fraudulent currencies circulating in the region, and report them immediately to authorities for appropriate action,” he said.
