MANILA – Manila Water promised its customers on Thursday that water will be available throughout the summer.

“With summer approaching and Angat Dam roughly 17 meters below its typical high operating level of 212 meters, Manila Water continues to offer a stable and reliable water supply to its consumers,” said Manila Water spokesperson Jeric Sevilla Jr. in a statement.

He claimed that Metro Manila’s East Zone concessionaire has put in place contingency and augmentation plans, working closely with the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) and the National Water Resources Board (NWRB) to help ensure continuous water supply even during peak demand periods.

These contingencies include maximizing the Cardona Water Treatment Plant’s 100 million liter-per-day (MLD) capacity, which draws water from Laguna Lake; operating deep wells that can provide an additional 115 MLD; and operating the 20 MLD Marikina Portable Water Treatment Plant, which treats water from the Marikina River.

Apart from this, Sevilla noted that operational changes are being made, such as backwash recovery or re-treating the wastewater byproduct of the water treatment process, as well as water pressure control across the East Zone when necessary.

He also mentioned that further inflows to the La Mesa Reservoir could come from the adjacent Alat Dam.

Manila Water, he said, continues to fight for prudent water use with its government partners, the MWSS and the NWRB.

While the government and concessionaires collaborate to ensure the necessary water supply, the general public is encouraged to use water wisely and responsibly in order to reduce water waste.
