CAAP airports are prepared for an influx of passengers over the Lenten season.
MANILA, Philippines โ According to a representative for the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), the country’s 83 airports are ready for the flood of passengers during the Lenten season.
“We don’t need to add people because our personnel is complete.” The list of flights has already been given to our provincial managers,” CAAP spokesperson Eric Apolonio told the Philippine News Agency.
He went on to say that some provincial airports only have two flights each day, as opposed to the majority of flights at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).
The CAAP operates 83 airports, 42 of which are for commercial flights and 41 of which are municipal airports that do not operate commercial flights.
The following airports, according to CAAP, are night-rated or capable of allowing evening flights:
Old Legazpi Airport; Roxas Airport; Panglao-Bohol Airport; Tuguegarao Airport (special operations on take off); Cotabato (departure only); Naga Airport; Bicol International Airport; Puerto Princesa International Airport; Zamboanga Airport; Bacolod-Silay Airport; Butuan Airport; Iloilo International Airport; Laguindingan Airport; Laguindingan Airport; Laguindingan Airport; Laguindingan
Because these airports are night-rated, Apolonio believes they will help relieve congestion in other places, particularly at the NAIA.
“Previously, airlines had to schedule flights between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. because they couldn’t fly to provincial airports that weren’t rated until later.” They can now fly to Bicol, for example, even at 7 p.m.,” he explained.
“That would save the airlines time and fuel.” Having night-rated airports will provide them additional slot alternatives, allowing them to avoid flying over Metro Manila while waiting to land, which would be a waste of fuel,” he noted.
While CAAP anticipates a surge in passengers, Apolonio believes the number will not recover to pre-pandemic levels.
“There will undoubtedly be a boom since there is a demand,” says the expert (for travel). Airlines have been providing ‘piso fares,’ but the number will not be as high as it was before the outbreak,” he said.
Passenger traffic at all CAAP airports hit 25 million in 2019, seven million in 2020, and six million in 2021, according to Apolonio.
