MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte stated on Thursday that if the situation worsens, he may be forced to order the suspension of e-sabong (online cockfighting) operations.

Duterte made the remarks during a speech in Lapu-Lapu City, noting that more Filipinos are becoming addicted to online cockfighting.

Last month, Philippine National Police Chief Gen. Dionardo Carlos instructed all unit commanders to examine their subordinates’ electronic devices in order to identify officers who are addicted to online cockfighting.

At least three cops implicated in the e-sabong kidnappings are presently being held in solitary confinement at the Police Regional Office – Calabarzon headquarters, where they will face charges in the coming days.

Duterte had previously asked Congress to issue a legislative franchise to control the activities of the betting game in order to enhance “transparency” in e-sabong.
