The Philippines has pledged P5.1 million to help with the humanitarian response in Afghanistan.
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva said Friday that the Philippine government has given USD100,000 (about PHP5.1 million) to support the humanitarian response in Afghanistan.
“(The) Philippines announces a USD100,000 voluntary donation to the humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan. In a statement, it stated, “This is in keeping with our great humanitarian history and solidarity with the Afghan people.”
The country’s voluntary contribution was given during a high-level pledging event held by the United Kingdom, Germany, and Qatar and introduced by UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
The UN-coordinated Afghan humanitarian mission is seeking USD4.4 billion, which is three times the amount asked in 2021.
Afghanistan was thrown into an economic and humanitarian crisis of catastrophic proportions a year after Taliban insurgents captured the capital and took control of the country.
“We fear a famine and malnutrition disaster in Afghanistan unless prompt action is taken,” the UN head said.
According to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Afghans are already selling their children and even body parts to feed their families. It claimed that because the country’s economy has “essentially collapsed,” there is “very little” cash and that even international help is now barely functioning.
Food security levels have “plummeted at an alarming rate,” according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), “leaving half the population facing severe hunger, including nine million in a state of emergency food insecurity — the highest number in the world.”
The UN estimates that more than 24.4 million people in Afghanistan require humanitarian assistance to survive as a result of years of violence and periodic drought.
