PH condemns North Korea’s’reckless’ missile test
MANILA, Philippines โ The Philippine government denounced North Korea’s intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launch last week through the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Saturday.
The DFA denounced the move as “reckless and provocative conduct” that jeopardizes peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, in the region, and around the world, according to a statement.
“We renew our demand on the DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) to comply with its international obligations under relevant UN Security Council resolutions, and to commit to a path of constructive and peaceful engagement,” it stated.
Pyongyang claimed to have “successfully” launched the Hwasong-17, a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile, from Sunan in Pyongyang City on March 24, marking the country’s first long-range test since 2017.
The United Nations stated it traveled 1,090 kilometers and reached a height of roughly 6,200 kilometers, creating an impact on the sea within Japan’s exclusive economic zone, citing the state-owned Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
South Korea’s military, on the other hand, believes Pyongyang staged the test and instead used a modified version of the Hwasong-15 that it tested in 2017.
“Although the projectile fired on March 24 appears to be the Hwasong-17 due to the increase in its top altitude and flight time, our assessment is that it is more similar to the Hwasong-15 than the Hwasong-17,” the Korean Ministry of National Defense said on March 29, according to Seoul-based Yonhap.
Last week, UN Secretary-General Antรณnio Guterres sharply condemned the launch, calling it yet another “breach” of the country’s own 2018 ballistic missile test moratorium, as well as a “clear violation” of pertinent Security Council resolutions.
He warned that the launch of the long-range missile might lead to a considerable increase in tensions on the Korean Peninsula, and he encouraged North Korea to refrain from pursuing “any additional counter-productive activities.”
