HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – After slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars last weekend, Will Smith resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Friday.

In a statement, Smith added, “I will completely embrace any and all repercussions for my conduct.” “My acts at the 94th Academy Awards were startling, painful, and unacceptable,” she said.

Smith’s resignation comes nearly a week after hitting Chris Rock across the face onstage at the Oscars because he was offended by a joke made about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

“Keep my wife’s name out of your (expletive) lips,” Smith said after the slap.

“Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home are among those I have injured,” Smith stated.

“I betrayed the Academy’s trust.” I took away the opportunity for other nominees and winners to celebrate and be recognized for their outstanding efforts. I’m devastated. I want to refocus attention on those who deserve it for their accomplishments, allowing the Academy to return to its tremendous work supporting creativity and artistry in film.”

Smith might have faced suspension or expulsion if the Academy’s board of governors had convened an emergency meeting this week to launch a formal review process.

Smith’s Oscar for best actor, which he received for his part in King Richard, might still be revoked despite his resignation.

However, this is highly unlikely and has never happened in the case of a code of conduct violation.

As part of its assessment process, the Academy’s board of directors will meet again on April 15 to determine additional sanctions.

“I will accept whatever further repercussions the Board thinks appropriate,” Smith added at the end of his remarks.

“Change takes time, and I’m determined to do the work necessary to guarantee that violence never again triumphs over reason,” he said.
