BARMM changes work hours for Muslims who are fasting.

CITY OF COTABATO – From Monday through Friday, civil servants in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) are now allowed to leave work at 3:30 p.m.

On Monday, BARMM Chief Minister Ahod “Murad” Ebrahim also changed the working hours of officials and staff during Ramadan.

Muslims who are able-bodied began fasting from sunrise to sundown on April 3 and will end on May 2.

“Muslim officials and employees who observe fasting throughout the holy month are permitted to work from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.,” Ebrahim wrote in Memorandum Circular No. 0051.

“All authorities and workers shall restore to their respective regular working hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. after the end of Ramadan,” he added.

Ebrahim advised everyone Bangsamoro to spread love ahead of the fasting month’s start. He further urged the public to maintain physical separation because the threat of Covid-19 is still present and “is still surrounding us.”

“We overcame the pandemic, and I believe the pandemic will eventually cease,” he remarked in the vernacular.

Ramadan, the holiest month for Muslims around the world, falls during the country’s election season, which culminates on May 9 with national and local elections.

“I hope there will be peace during and after the local and national elections,” Ebrahim said. “I hope there will be patience and understanding about our political perspective.”

“Let us not allow the political season to disrupt our fasting and religious activity,” he added.
