In the 30th year of relations with Ukraine, President Obama reiterates his open-door policy.
MANILA, Philippines β In the midst of the ongoing war and humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, the Philippine government, through the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), has underlined its willingness to receive Ukrainian refugees.
On Thursday, the DFA issued a statement commemorating 30 years of diplomatic relations between Manila and Ukraine.
“In keeping with its long history of humanitarian support, the Philippines stands ready to welcome Ukrainians fleeing their country’s conflict,” the DFA said.
In March, the Philippines was one of the countries that responded to the UN’s USD1.7 billion flash appeal, donating USD100,000 (about PHP5 million) to help give essential humanitarian supplies to individuals inside the war-torn country, including those seeking refuge beyond its boundaries.
Ukraine is grateful for Manila’s choice to open its doors to Ukrainians, according to Ukrainian Ambassador to the Philippines Olexander Nechytaylo in a recent opinion post.
“We essentially share the same beliefs, which is one of the reasons for the high number of person-to-person contacts. Ukraine is fighting for its independence once more today “he stated
“We value the Philippines’ unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. We are also grateful for the most recent decision to open the door to Ukrainians who may require a safe haven while the war rages on: this is something we will never forget “Added he.
‘Defending rights’ is a phrase used to describe a group of people who are fighting for their
Nechytaylo drew parallels between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Filipino national hero Dr. Jose Rizal as Ukraine strives for its rights and freedom.
“‘I don’t see why I should stoop my head when I can raise it high, or place it in the hands of my adversaries when I can fight them,’ Jose Rizal once stated. When comparing him to President Zelenskyy, one can see some remarkable similarities, notably in terms of his capacity to inspire and lead the nation during crucial stages in its history “he stated
Moscow had violated not just international law and the UN Charter by invading Ukraine, but also the Budapest Memorandum of 1994, the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia, and at least a dozen more bilateral and multilateral accords to which Russia is a signatory, according to the ambassador.
“The Russian military is purposefully attacking civilians, residential homes, key infrastructure, medical facilities, and shelters while fighting in Ukraine. At a news conference in Antalya, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made no attempt to hide the fact that Russian planes bombed the maternity facility in Mariupol on purpose “he stated
“The full extent and ferocity of atrocities committed by the Russian military into a completely new dimension,” he stated of the Bucha disaster.
Ukraine had accused Russian forces of war crimes in the town, but Moscow dismissed the claims as “fake news.”
Images of victims laying on the streets of Bucha, some with their hands tied behind their backs and others burned in mass graves, have triggered worldwide calls for a war crimes probe.
Foreign Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. retweeted a New Yorker article titled “Collecting Bodies in Bucha” on Thursday, detailing firsthand accounts from Bucha residents who discovered members of their family and neighbors dead after Russian forces withdrew from the town, the majority of whom had gunshot wounds to the head.
“This explains our UN vote,” Locsin captioned with only five words.
According to the UN, the Russian offensive, which began on February 24, has displaced more than 10 million people, with 4.2 million of them fleeing Ukraine’s borders.
As of April 3, it had recorded at least 3,455 civilian casualties in the country, with 1,417 killed and 2,038 injured.
