MANILA, Philippines — For the safety of pedestrians and commuters, the Quezon City administration will renovate its footbridges, conduct road maintenance, and install more street lamps.

Several footbridges were found to be in need of repair or upgrade during a recent inspection by city engineers.

Additional Green Open Reclaimed Access (GORA) lanes will be constructed to encourage walking and cycling.

“We’ve witnessed how beneficial our GORA lanes and bike lanes are to the people, not just locals, but everyone who utilizes them,” Mayor Joy Belmonte said in a statement released Tuesday.

More street lamps will be placed, and park greening will be stepped up.

Between 2,500 and 3,000 lamp posts will be installed annually for the next eight to ten years as part of the city’s long-term plan.

Belmonte acknowledged that 40% of the city’s roads are poorly lit.

Once completed, a central management system will oversee all 75,000 lights.

Since 2021, several park construction and repair projects have been underway, as well as the inauguration of a 5.39-kilometer GORA route in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The current GORA lane connects Doa Hemady Avenue, Scout Tobias Street, and Mother Ignacia Avenue to three major thoroughfares: Aurora Boulevard, Quezon Avenue, and Edsa Avenue.
