MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte has stated that he will not be endorsing the candidacy of any presidential candidate less than a week before the May 9, 2022 polls.

Duterte denied speculations that he will reveal his support for his selected successor in the coming days during his filmed Talk to the People.

Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, the president’s son and Davao City Vice Mayor, indicated in March that there are “indications” that his father may endorse former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. for president.

Keeping a ‘neutral’ attitude

Despite his son’s and political party’s recent declarations, Duterte stated that he has no plans to support any presidential candidate.

Duterte went on to say that he had urged his Cabinet to remain “neutral” and refuse to back any presidential contender.

“Hindi ko naman sila pinagbabawalan (I am not prohibiting them),” he added, adding that he had requested the Cabinet. “Kung maaari lang kayo mag-remain neutral na lang rin, sinabi ko. Kung may kandidato ka (I advised them to be as neutral as possible.) Keep it to yourself and vote if they have a candidate.”

To minimize further speculation that he is endorsing a particular presidential contender, he provided his Cabinet with the recommendation.

“Let us refrain from endorsing any candidates so that there are no doubts or insinuation that we are backing this or that candidate,” he urged.

Elections that are “clean and peaceful”

While he has no intention of endorsing any presidential candidate, Duterte has guaranteed the public that the polls will be “clean” and “peaceful.”

Duterte maintained that the national and local elections on May 9, 2022, will be devoid of violence.

“We’ll have elections again,” he declared, “and like I promised, we’ll have an organized, clean, and honest election.” “We will do everything in our power to guarantee that the election is devoid of violence and that voters are not intimidated in any way from exercising their right to vote and pick whoever they choose.”
