MANILA – President Rodrigo Roa Duterte called on the public and private sectors to invest in “safer” and “responsive” infrastructure as a foundation for a thriving economy on Monday.

During the inauguration of the new Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Head Office Building in Barangay Ugong, Pasig City, he made this statement.

“I strongly urge you to invest in safer and more responsive infrastructure, whether you are in the public or private sector.” In his speech, he urged everyone to “invest in our people and our country.”

Duterte expressed his hope that the new building complex will motivate officials and personnel to keep working hard for a “sustainable, resilient, vibrant, and most importantly, people-centered” MMDA.

“In the next days, we’ll see how useful this project is in assisting the agency in meeting its objectives. “It is my desire that the momentum we have gained via this initiative, as well as our other recent ventures,” he added.

Meanwhile, he complimented the MMDA on the construction of its new headquarters, which he said will give everyone in the agency the room they need to work more efficiently.

He also praised the MMDA for its “tireless” service in meeting the people’s demands.

“As if managing transportation, garbage, catastrophe avoidance, and public safety in Metro Manila weren’t difficult enough, the Covid-19 outbreak made it more difficult. What makes me proud is that, over the last two years, the men and women of the MMDA have fearlessly and fully dedicated themselves to providing genuine service to their fellow Filipinos,” he remarked.

Duterte and MMDA Chairman Romando Artes, together with Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea and Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go, unveiled the building marker at the occasion.

The new building complex, according to Artes, demonstrates the MMDA’s dedication to strengthening the organization and improving services to its clients.

“It all began with an idea, and today we stand in the actual building of our lifetime dream – a state-of-the-art government facility that serves the needs of our staff, as well as Metro Manila’s clients and partners.” He stated, “We now have a secure, structurally solid, sustainable, and productive headquarters to call home.”

The new 20-story MMDA building, complete with roof deck and helipad, will be awarded a one-star rating by the Building for Ecologically Responsive Design Excellence (BERDE).

BERDE is an assessment, measurement, monitoring, and certification tool for green building projects.

During the late Chair Danilo Lim’s tenure, the new MMDA building was conceived in collaboration with the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP)-Makati Chapter, which held a national design competition for the facility with the theme “MMDA moving towards a sustainable, resilient, dynamic, and people-centered metropolis.”

The MMDA and the Robinsons Land Corporation (RLC) formed a partnership for the construction of the office the same year.

The winning conceptual design, “Solihiya Moderno,” by Architect Daryl John Abaygar, was utilized as inspiration.

The traditional dwelling silhouette and “solihiya” weave pattern inspired the “Solihiya Moderno.”

Employees of the MMDA will begin relocating into their new building later this year.
